Protecting Electoral Processes in the Information Environment

Sarajevo, 31 March 2026 – Representatives of the project team of the International Institute for Democracy and Electoral Assistance (International IDEA) visited the Central Election Commission of Bosnia and Herzegovina today and presented the project entitled “Protecting Elections in the Information Environment”, financed by the German Federal Foreign Office.

In the period from 2023 to 2025, International IDEA implemented the first phase of the project in six countries: Colombia, Fiji, Iraq, Libya, Malaysia and Paraguay. The second phase provides an opportunity to expand activities to Bosnia and Herzegovina during 2026 and 2027, together with Guatemala and Lebanon.

The aim of the project is to strengthen public trust in electoral processes by mitigating key risks in the information environment, including disinformation, malign influence operations, harmful content and narratives that undermine trust.

The Central Election Commission of Bosnia and Herzegovina and International IDEA agreed today on the next steps in their cooperation with a view to the successful implementation of the project and the further strengthening of electoral integrity in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

International IDEA is an intergovernmental organization composed of 35 member states and operates globally to advance democracy. The Institute has extensive experience in supporting electoral processes and holds permanent observer status at the United Nations.
