Promotion of the Initiative for Marking Global Election Day

Sarajevo, 5 February 2026 – At the conference of the Association of European Election Officials (ACEEEO) held in 2005, more than 20 member countries agreed to launch an initiative to establish the first Thursday in the month of February as a day that would represent, worldwide, the hallmark of democratic elections, that is, as Global Election Day.

The Central Election Commission of Bosnia and Herzegovina has been promoting this initiative for the twentieth consecutive year.

The first Thursday in February was proposed as the date for marking Global Election Day because the majority of international agreements in the field of elections were signed on or around this date.

The democratic will of citizens is the foundation of state authority; this will must be expressed through regular and fair elections, conducted with universal and equal suffrage, by secret ballot or by another equally free voting procedure.

For all the above reasons, the Central Election Commission of Bosnia and Herzegovina continuously provides strong support to the Initiative of the Association of European Election Officials (ACEEEO) to mark the first Thursday in February as Global Election Day.

The Central Election Commission of Bosnia and Herzegovina has also invited municipal/city election commissions to promote, in an appropriate manner, the initiative for marking Global Election Day.
