Member of BiH CEC, Dr. Irena Hadžiabdić, Participated in the Conference on the Digitalization of the Electoral Process in Tirana

SARAJEVO, October 17, 2025 – Dr. Irena Hadžiabdić, a member of the Central Election Commission of Bosnia and Herzegovina, participated in a regional conference titled “Oversight of the Digitalization of the Electoral Process: Towards Closer Alignment Between the European Union and Western Balkan Countries,” held today in Tirana.

The conference was jointly organized by the International Institute for Democracy and Electoral Assistance (International IDEA) and the Central Election Commission of Albania, with financial support from the Foundation „Mercator“. The event brought together representatives of electoral administrations, oversight bodies, civil society, and experts from  European Union member states and the Western Balkans, aiming to exchange experiences and strengthen cooperation in the process of digitalisation of the election process.

Dr. Hadžiabdić took part in a panel dedicated to preserving the integrity of elections in an increasingly digitalized environment. In her presentation, she shared Bosnia and Herzegovina’s experiences in protecting personal data, managing digital electoral processes, cybersecurity challenges, and combating misinformation during election cycles.

The conference also discussed current European regulations affecting the electoral process, including the Digital Services Act, the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), the European Media Freedom Act, and the Artificial Intelligence Act. Special attention was given to the new initiative, the European Democracy Shield, which aims to strengthen the resilience of democratic institutions and electoral processes against digital threats.
