SARAJEVO, 5 September 2024 – The Central Election Commission of Bosnia and Herzegovina has announced today the beginning of the election campaign for the 2024 Local Elections, scheduled to take place on 6 October 2024. The official election campaign will commence tomorrow and continue until 5 October 2024, at 07:00 hours, at which point the election silence will take effect.
President of the Central Election Commission of Bosnia and Herzegovina, Dr. Irena Hadžiabdić, has highlighted the key aspects of the forthcoming election campaign in accordance with the Election Law of BiH. During this period, political subjects, including 296 certified political parties, coalitions, lists of independent candidates, and independent candidates, will have the right to campaign freely across the country, with support from the relevant authorities.
The Central Election Commission of Bosnia and Herzegovina has already undertaken a series of activities to ensure the transparency and legality of the election process. It has been emphasized that the process of certification of political subjects and candidates has been completed, with a total of 26,089 certified candidates, including 10,983 women. Additionally, the Central Voters' Register has been finalized, encompassing 3,400,204 voters, including 44,789 voters residing abroad.
The Central Election Commission of Bosnia and Herzegovina has also imposed sanctions on political subjects for premature campaigning, with a total financial penalty amounting to 268,000 BAM. Furthermore, out of 50 posts by political subjects that were required to be removed from social media, 38 have been successfully removed. Of the remaining posts, 9 have not been removed, and the remaining three are posters, billboards, or other printed materials.
The provisions of the law concerning the prohibition of hate speech, the use of weapons at gatherings, and the obligation for political subjects to equally promote candidates of both genders have been particularly emphasized. The Central Election Commission of Bosnia and Herzegovina has the authority to impose sanctions for violations, including the removal of candidates from lists and the annulment of the certification of political subjects.
The Central Election Commission of Bosnia and Herzegovina calls on all participants in the election process to conduct a fair campaign, adhering to laws and regulations, and urges the media to report on election activities accurately and professionally in accordance with the journalistic code.
Finally, the Central Election Commission of Bosnia and Herzegovina has emphasized that all future activities will be conducted transparently and made publicly accessible, including live video broadcasts of sessions and active engagement on social media.
